IDG Blog - Automation
Barb Goldworm March 2012
Discussions of IT optimization typically revolve around resource optimization, with the resources being hardware and software resources. Clearly, optimizing the infrastructure is critical to a well-managed environment and to getting the most value out of the hardware and software, both in and out of the datacenter. However, optimization should not stop with the infrastructure. Optimization of human resources — increasing productivity through automation — is an equally important part of the process.
IDG Myth Busters Myth: Desktop Virtualization is just another workload
Barb Goldworm, President and Chief Analyst, FOCUS
The increasing impact of tablets and smartphones, the Consumerization of IT, bring your own device (BYOD) initiatives, and the success of server virtualization, have all contributed to an increased interest in desktop virtualization. In fact, the influx of tablets at the executive levels of organizations (CFO, CEO, VP) has changed the conversation around desktop strategies, in many cases resulting in CIO-led initiatives including BYOD and rethinking the new "desktop." Our FOCUS research shows that 30-40% of organizations have now implemented some form of desktop virtualization, with another 30-40% in various planning stages. Desktop virtualization was rated the next highest virtualization priority after expansion of server virtualization...
IDG Myth Busters Myth: For virtualization and cloud environments, the infrastructure doesn't matter.
The successful move towards cloud computing requires transformation of the data center to a more dynamic, agile, and scalable environment, placing increased demands on the underlying infrastructure. Unified infrastructure and management offer a more flexible yet less complex foundation, overcoming past pain points and helping to deliver agile IT services....

Moving into 2012, as CIOs and IT management look beyond consolidation and basic server virtualization, top priorities include streamlining and optimizing IT operations. Building on the accomplishments of virtualization, organizations are looking at how to expand virtualization and its benefits and move toward private cloud. Interestingly, although over 90% of organizations have implemented server virtualization to some degree, only 25-35% of the total server population has been virtualized. If the benefits of virtualization are so strong, why is it that the percentage of servers that are virtualized is still so low?.....
